Troubleshooting and Servicing Your Alfa Laval Butterfly Valve Assembly
Seat wear, actuator faults, and incorrect seal material account for the vast majority of service calls on an Alfa Laval butterfly valve in dairy and food processing lines. Fortunately, each failure mode has a distinct cause, a clear diagnostic path, and a defined repair procedure. Knowing which problem you are dealing with before pulling the valve saves time, avoids unnecessary parts orders, and gets the line back up faster.
How the Alfa Laval Butterfly Valve Works
The Alfa Laval butterfly valve is a quarter-turn shutoff valve. A disc mounted on a central shaft rotates 90 degrees between fully open and fully closed. In the open position, the disc sits parallel to flow, creating minimal resistance. In the closed position, the disc presses against a resilient seat to form a seal. That seat is the most wear-prone component in the assembly. It absorbs the mechanical load of every close cycle and must also resist the chemistry of both the process fluid and the Clean-In-Place (CIP) cleaning solution used between production runs.

The Alfa Laval LKB range is the most common configuration in dairy and food processing. It is designed for hygienic flow control in stainless steel piping systems and also features a modular design that allows wear part replacement without dismantling surrounding pipe runs. That maintainability is a key reason the LKB is widely specified in cheese, dairy, and beverage plants.
Diagnosing Seat and Seal Failures
Leakage is the most common sign of a failing Alfa Laval butterfly valve. It appears in two forms. Specifically, internal leakage means the valve is not sealing fully in the closed position. Product or cleaning solution passes through the disc-to-seat interface. Meanwhile, external leakage appears at the stem, where fluid escapes around the shaft seal rather than through the valve body.
Internal leakage almost always traces to one of three causes. First, seat wear from repeated cycling. Over time, the resilient seat loses its ability to conform to the disc edge, and the seal degrades. Then, chemical incompatibility between the seat material and the process fluid or CIP chemistry. Third, debris trapped between the disc and seat during a close cycle, which prevents full contact and leaves a leak path.
Seat material selection matters significantly here. In contrast, BUNA-N seats perform better with oils and fats but degrade under high-temperature caustic exposure. Specifying the wrong elastomer for the cleaning chemistry in use is a common source of premature seat failure.
External stem leakage is a separate problem. It typically results from worn stem packing or a damaged stem seal. In either case, the fix is a seal replacement using the correct Alfa Laval service kit for the valve size and configuration.
Actuator and Control Issues
Pneumatic actuators on the Alfa Laval butterfly valve can cause operational problems when air supply pressure is insufficient, when the actuator spring is fatigued, or when the ThinkTop sensing unit loses signal feedback. A valve that fails to open or close on command is not always a mechanical problem. In many cases, the issue is upstream in the control system.

Start by checking supply air pressure at the actuator. The LKB range requires consistent air pressure within the specified operating range. Low pressure causes slow or incomplete actuation. Next, check the ThinkTop unit for indicator status. A flashing or absent signal points to a sensing issue rather than a mechanical one. In contrast, a valve that moves slowly but fully is more likely a spring or actuator seal issue.
Alfa Laval Butterfly Valve Service Procedure and Parts
Servicing an Alfa Laval butterfly valve starts with isolating the line and relieving pressure. The valve body can then be removed from the pipe clamps without disturbing adjacent fittings. Seat replacement requires removing the disc, extracting the worn seat from the valve body, fitting the new seat, and reassembling in the correct sequence. No special tools are required for standard LKB configurations.
Using genuine Alfa Laval service kits ensures that replacement parts meet the original design specifications for material, hardness, and dimensional fit. Third-party seats and seals may appear compatible but often fail sooner and can void service agreements.
